The Community of St. Mary has been a presence on this Mountain for over a century. In every generation, the Sisters have provided an anchor for good, an evangelistic concern for the welfare of the people of this area, and a rich ministry of work and prayer. Today CSM carries on that historic tradition with their ministries to the body, the soul, and the Earth with their Organic Prayer Garden and their internship program.
For the past several years, young adult Summer Interns and Long-Term Interns have lived and worked, studied and prayed as a part of this program. Their presence allows the work of the gardens to flourish, the worship of the Convent to be enriched, and provides a time for these interns to discern and deepen vocation in the rhythm of a Benedictine monastic order. Sister Madeleine Mary says, “These young men and women have been an invaluable addition to CSM’s life, ministry, and worship, and have helped extend our ministry into the community. They have blessed CSM and our guests with energy, laughter, creativity, new ideas and new questions, not to mention a great deal of hard work.”
Through the years, CSM has weathered many storms—maybe not a hurricane–but certainly trials and tribulations! Weathering storms requires not only the hope and help of Heaven, but tangible monetary resources to ensure that the good work of CSM continues for future generations.
On April 9th, 2016, Heaven, Hope, and Hurricanes, a Spring Gala to help endow CSM’s Internship Program, will be held at Cravens Hall in Sewanee. This lovely evening will begin with a reception of wine, hors d’oeuvres, and a silent auction, then progress to a delicious Cajun dinner buffet, followed by a fantastic musical performance by Louisiana’s Brenda DeKeyser Lowry and Joshua “Bubba” Murrell, who perform as a Gospel duo B & B on the Rock, as well as the core of a blues band, Blue Merlot. Heaven, Hope, and Hurricanes will mix both traditions for a lively interpretation of Resurrection in the face of the hurricanes of life! The event begins at 6 pm. Come celebrate with the Sisters of St. Mary their many years of service on this Mountain, their resurrected vision for the future, and God’s good gifts to all our lives!
Tickets for Heaven, Hope, and Hurricanes are $75.00 each or $135.00 per couple. Reservations may be made for by calling 931-598-0046. Your sponsorship of this event is also encouraged; a minimum $1000 sponsorship includes advertising at the event, and a complimentary table for eight. Gold level patrons contribute $500 and receive 4 gala tickets, silver level patrons contribute $250 and receive 2 gala tickets. CSM will be most grateful for the generous support of the Sewanee Community for their Organic Prayer Internship Program.
